Donbas is still the territory of humanitarian catastrophe, meanwhile the conflict in eastern Ukraine can become frozen. On February 15, it was stated by Elena Petryayeva, head of community initiative «Restoring Donbas» at the end of the conference in Brussels.
The conference, named “Donbas and prospects of relations between the EU, Ukraine and Russia” was initiated by Hans Seidel Foundation, which is carrying out more than 90 projects in 60 countries today. The meeting was attended by representatives of the European Parliament, politicians and experts from different countries. In particular, Othmar Karas – a member of European Parliament, Alexei Gromyko – director of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IE RAS), representatives of Hans Seidel Foundation, namely, Thomas Mayr-Harting, Daniel Seiberling, Christian Forstner, Marcus Eu were the speakers of the conference.
Petryayeva noted the inadmissibility of this “suspended” state in the region, while she was commenting the situation in conflict zone.
“Nowadays, Donbas has disappeared from the scenes of the world media. However, its problems remain. Moreover, volunteers of our initiatives, who are working in ATO area, fix the growth of these problems and significant difficulties”, – she said.
According to Petryayeva, some territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions do not have proper supply of food and drinking water. Provision of medical care and, consequently, risk of outbreaks of epidemics are widespread problems. At the same time, current situation remains critical, regardless of the party, which controls one or another area of the region.
“Cities on the demarcation line are living in constant shortage of food and medicine due to disordered administrative management, destroyed logistics and constant shelling. The territory of Donbas, which is under Ukrainian control, is experiencing significant reboot due to the inflow of IDPs. Social infrastructure of the region, which was affected by war, does not allow to live normally”, – Petryayeva said.
Let us remind, Oleksandr Klymenko – founder of the initiative, noted in his paper «Minsk-2: «a missed chance for peace» that it is necessary to reboot the legislative branch and to vote amendments to the Constitution in order to resolve the conflict in Donbas. In addition, he offers to return the dialogue to the level of the “Big Twenty» instead of “Norman format”.
On February 16, 2016, it was carried out an exhibition of children’s drawings in Brussels “Peace and war through the eyes of Donbas children”, which was organized by community initiative “Restoring Donbas”. It included the pictures prepared by children from Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine. The majority of them are internally displaced persons or still remain in the conflict zone.
The exhibition was opened from 10 AM till 9:30 PM. The entrance was free
At 7:00 PM it was hold an official ceremony, while it was demonstrated presentations of videos about Donbas children and Sbitneva Sofia – a winner of the contest “Peace and war through the eyes of Donbas children” – took the floor.
