Most of the inhabitants of the southeast believe that Ukraine should become a neutral country

The majority of the surveyed residents of the southeast (41%) believe that Ukraine should become a neutral country, 10% of respondents believe that in foreign policy Ukraine should strive to become closer with Russia, 22% – with Europe. Every fourth inhabitant of the east and south of Ukraine wants to join the European Union and only 13% – to NATO. According to the GfK poll, every fourth (26%) resident of these regions sees Ukraine’s future in the EU, while only 14% want Ukraine to become part of the Customs Union.
The largest number of adherents of the EU in Dnepro region (35%) and Kherson region (32%); Customs Union is supported by those who live in Odessa region (22%).
Among respondents only 13% see the future of Ukrainian state in NATO. The residents of Mykolayiv (19%) and Zaporizhzhya regions (19%) expressed the greatest support of the Alliance, while the least – on the territory of Donetsk region controlled by the Ukrainian authorities (4%).
The survey was conducted by GfK on behalf of the Media Institute with the support of the Ukrainian confidence-building initiative (UCBI) and USAID in January-March 2017 in eight regions of the east and south of Ukraine (Dnepro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolayiv, Kherson, Odesa, Donetsk and Luhansk regions controlled by the government of Ukraine. 15,103 respondents participated in the interview.
Every fifth inhabitant of the south and east of Ukraine supports the autonomy of Donbas.
