According to Vitaliy Martyniuk, the analyst at the Ukrainian Independent Center for Political Studies, complete clearance of Lugansk and Donetsk regions may cost more than €10 mln.
Actually, it is really difficult to calculate how much Ukraine will need funds to clean up the area from mines and explosives, as the conflict continues, and engineering units already conducting fragmentary clearance, but the total could reach €10 mln, – Vitaliy Martyniuk admitted.
According to him, cleaning the area from mines is not a cheap deal. For example, in 2015, in Croatia, to eliminate the threat of mines and explosive devices in the area of 104 square meters. km, spent €28.7 million. Moreover, for ten-year period of 2009-2019 National Program for Mine Action provided €550 million for 954.5 sq. Km. In fact, for the mine clearance 1 sq. km area would cost half a million euros.
The area in the east of Ukraine needs to be cleared is about the same as in the Balkans. As the experience of Croatia, the contaminated area is 36% of questionable surface. That is, the contaminated area in the east of Ukraine may be at least 7-8 thsnd sq. km.
Not far along in Marinka volunteers of Restoring Donbas held the first training for mine safety.
