Series of training sessions on mine safety organized by volunteers of Restoring Donbas Initiative started today in Mariupol (Donetsk region). The practical assistance provided by Ukrainian Scientific Center of Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine, Health Protection Ministry of Ukraine, and Health Protection Department of Donetsk regional state administration, Mariupol City Council Health Department.
– Every 20 minutes someone is killed or injured by mines in the world. 100 years ago, 80% of landmine victims were military, but now 80% of the victims are civilians. Nowadays, children are dying in Eastern Ukraine due to hostilities. Mine injuries are very dangerous and specific. Therefore, we made the decision to start series of trainings on mine safety. We managed to carry out such trainings in Lisichansk and Mariinka. Nowadays, we are in Mariupol. We’ll held trainings for children at two schools. We will carry out trainings on mine safety and emergency assistance for physician in municipal hospitals for two days, – Olena Petryayeva, the head of Restoring Donbas Initiative, stated during opening of the series of trainings.
The first 200 emergency physicians learnt algorithms of providing pre-medical assistance in case of mine-explosive injuries by experts and trainers of Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Center of Emergency and Disaster Medicine based on Mariupol municipal hospital #2.
According to Evgeny Morozov, Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Center of Emergency and Disaster Medicine, most regions of Ukraine have passed such training program. However, it is extremely important to carry out it on the East of the country. Thus, we hold it in Lisichansk and Marinka. Nowadays, this program came to Mariupol. Unfortunately, the reason is obvious. Doctors in Donbas usually deal with mine-explosive injuries both among soldiers and civilian population.
Igor Kiyashko, the director of the Center for emergency medical care and disaster medicine in Donetsk region, noted that the main aim of the training is to learn the rules of primary and general care in case of mine injuries. Is very important that under the auspice of the Ministry of Health, Restoring Donbas initiative has begun activity in this medical field and is able to involve professional doctors, citizens of the region into the projects.
The video of the trainings will be posted for public use later.
