The representative of Ukraine in the Trilateral contact group on the settlement of the situation in the East of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma considers it appropriate extension of the negotiation format, in particular by the United States. He stated this on Wednesday, December 14.
“Recently, some critics of the Minsk negotiations of former and current politicians argue about the need to change the format of negotiations. In particular, the offer to invite the United States or other countries into the process that have signed the Budapest Memorandum. These proposals are, in my opinion, are not just naive in terms of implementation, but also damage the Minsk process, “- Kuchma said.
According to him, the new format can appear only at the request of Ukraine, it is necessary also the intention of those countries, which Ukraine would like to see as negotiators.
“If talking about the United States, they did not plan to become a direct participant in the talks on the settlement of the situation in Donbass,”- the second President of Ukraine said.
Kuchma also said that the experience of other conflicts in the post-Soviet space (Nagorno-Karabakh, Pridniestrovye) that even advanced formats do not give real results.
The ex-president noted that the role of the Tripartite Liaison Group in the negotiation process is the auxiliary; the main stream is a Norman format with four leaders of Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine.
“We need to do everything possible to fulfill the agreements reached in Minsk, not to question them. Moreover, we can not discard them. This not only can destroy the fragile truce reached, but also threatens the loss of international support for Ukraine”, – Kuchma said.
Earlier, the deputy head of the OSCE SMM stated that the parties could end the conflict at any moment.
