United Nations Population Fund (UN WFPA) in the framework of the project for the provision of humanitarian assistance in eastern Ukraine passed the necessary equipment to the hospital Rubezhne (Luhansk region). In particular, the hospital received neonatal incubators, fetal monitors, adjustable beds and medical kits reported by the press service of the United Nations Population Fund.
Describing the situation in Luhansk region, the UN WFPA pointed out that military operations have a negative impact on people’s access to quality obstetric and neonatal care. Medical institutions of tertiary level remained at uncontrolled territories.
Women with severe and potentially complicated pregnancy birth sent to Kharkiv and Dnepro regions. However, there is a category of patients who are contraindicated to travel long distances. Therefore, the regional health authority has defined the hospital in Rubezhne as institution, which should be forwarded pregnant women with potentially complicated childbirth and pregnancy complications. To help equip the center of high-quality equipment, the UN FN transferred to a medical facility two incubators, 1500 inspection of medical kits, fetal monitors and beds.
The representative of the UN WFPA noted that the cases of premature infants lead to a significant portion of perinatal and infant mortality rates: about 60% of cases of stillbirth, 50-70% of early neonatal mortality and 48-66% of infant mortality.
– Safe childbirth even in the conflict zone is one of the main concerns of the UN WFPA. The use of incubators in the first minutes of life will help to reduce mortality and disability in preterm infants with low body weight. We strive to preserve the life and health of every newborn, even where there is not enough assistance and quality equipment “, – stressed in the United Nations.
The fund also reported that, in general, in January-February 2017 UN WFPA handed in maternity hospitals of Luhansk and Donetsk regions 20 fetal monitors, 30 beds, 10 000 sets of Gynaecological and 3 incubators for premature infants; the total value of aid is 85 000 dollars.
The equipment purchased in the framework of the UN WFPA‘s “Response to acute humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable women and young girls affected by armed conflict in the east of Ukraine”, implemented with financial support from the US and UK governments.
As we have previously reported that Donetsk region residents of frontline villages lack access to medical care in a timely manner.
