IDPs from Donbas face with plethora facts of discrimination the authorities and require the protection and support from European structures. On September 27, it was stated by Olesya Medvedeva, volunteer of the “Restoring Donbas” community initiative founded by Oleksandr Klymenko and the Head of the Youth wing of the “Uspishna Kraina” party, during her speech in the European Parliament.
The activist was invited to the Brussels by MEPs Jiri Mashtalka, Javier Cousp Permuy (GUE / NGL), Tatjana Ždanoka (Greens / EFA) and Andrei Mamykin (S & D). She took the floor during the roundtable “Violation of human rights, limits to freedom of speech and political repressions in Ukraine”.
During the roundtable, Medvedeva drew the European partners’ attention to real facts of violation of the IDP’s rights. In particular, the activist of the “Restoring Donbas” told about IDP’s inability to participate in local elections, criticized the mechanisms for their verification, low level of state social assistance and deliberate aggressive information policy of the power towards IDPs.
In addition, she focused on the situation related to checkpoints along the demarcation line in ATO area.
“More than three years have passed! The checkpoints still have not been equipped. Moreover, it has been fixed more than hundreds of deaths of elderly people there. They were either looking after their apartments, or visiting their more elderly parents, who left there; or had no opportunity to live on the territory under Ukrainian control. People are dying in these queues! There are no basic living conditions. They stand there from two hours to several days. They also stand there during the shelling, which take place during the period of formal “ceasefire”, – Medvedev stated.
During the debates, she also emphasized that information police of current regime in Ukraine is aimed at turning of IPDs into second-class citizens.
“It is rather difficult to rent an apartment or get a job for IDPs due to the fact that media, which is controlled by the power, call them accomplices of terrorists. It offers to deprive such people of some civil rights. Creation of ghettos and concentration camps for dissentient Ukrainians have been seriously discussed on air of television channels, which are owned by the leaders of the country”, – she noted.
Besides the speech dedicated to problems of IDPs from Donbas, the activist of the “Restoring Donbas” and the Head of the Youth wing of the “Uspishna Kraina” party, presented a comprehensive Monitoring of human rights violations in Ukraine during 2017 to the participants of the above-mentioned event.
This document persuaded European partners of deterioration of the situation related to social, democratic rights and freedoms in Ukraine
In particular, the monitoring of the “Uspishna Varta” includes proven facts of persecution for political reasons of Ukrainian citizens, preclusion of legal activities of political parties, restrictions on the right to assemble peacefully, etc.
Particular emphasis of the document is placed on political prisoners in Ukraine and prisoners of conscience. For instance, Denis Kindrat, who stored communist symbols and literature, journalists Dmitry Vasilets, Evgeniy Timonin, Vasil Muravitsky, who advocated for public criticism of current power in social networks, and others.
